- 27, of Canaan, died unexpectedly at his home Jan. 6, 2017, after a continuing struggle with drug addiction.
Born June 18, 1989, in Bangor, the beloved son of Michael W. Merchant of Hampden and Suzette M. (Brown) Darge of Canaan, Michael attended Hampden schools, graduating from Hampden Academy in 2008.
A compassionate person, Michael recently worked as a CNA at the Dorothea Dix Psychiatric Center in Bangor. He had many interests, including working with computers and discussing social justice issues. He had plans to return to school.
Michael is survived by his mother, Suzette M. Darge and her husband, August, of Canaan, and his father, Michael Merchant and his wife, Kathy Villarreal, of Hampden; his twin brother, Mark I. Merchant of Hermon; his grandmother, Frances "Meme" Merchant of Lakeland, Fla.; and many aunts, uncles and cousins.
He was predeceased by his paternal grandfather, Frederick Merchant; his maternal grandparents, Edward and Gretchen Brown; and one cousin, Danny Reininger.
No services will be held at this time.
Arrangements are under the care and direction of Smart & Edwards Funeral Home, 183 Madison Ave., Skowhegan, Maine.
