Merle's Story

Dexter - Merle Herring Greene, 90, passed away on December 11, 2016, at the Maine Veterans Home in Bangor after a short illness. He was born in Sangerville, August 11, 1926, the son of Howard and Margaret (Herring) Greene.
He grew up in Sangerville, joined the service and served his country honorably in both the US Army and the US Air Force. He received the Good Conduct Medal, the Army of Occupation Medal and the World War II Victory Medal. He was discharged from the Air Force in 1951 due to a permanent disability. Most recently, he was included in the Honor Flight Maine trip, held on Oct 28 through Oct 30th, which took him to Washington D.C. where he was fortunate to visit the World War II Memorial.
Merle settled in Parkman, where he owned and operated a country store, sold Rawleigh products, served as a tax collector and the local Fire Warden, as well as handling Civil Defense. He then added various other occupations to his skill list to include, carpentry and boiler operations in local schools and mills. His work took him to the hospital in Manchester, NH, which he enjoyed very much and then on to managing a motel in Plymouth, NH. He retired from K-Mart in Salem, NH, in 1987 after 10 years of service, with many stories to tell. During his leisure time you would find him camping and canoeing.
He is survived by his estranged wife, Gloria Greene of Winter Haven, FL; children, Jacqueline and her husband, Robert Wilcox of Dover-Foxcroft, Jean Conner and her friend, Karl Hartley of Parkman, David Greene and his wife, Robin of Dexter; step children, Pat and her husband, Pete Jenson of FL, Christine Cary of FL, Keith Davis of NH; five grandchildren, six great grandchildren; nieces and nephews; and many friends.
