Merle's Story

OAKFIELD - Merle S. Burpee, 93, died Oct. 25, 2014 at his home with his family at his side. He was born July 5, 1921, in Oakfield, the son of Charles and Maude (Batchelder) Burpee.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Army having served in the So. Pacific and a 56-year member of the American Legion Post #52, Oakfield. He retired after 36 years from Bangor and Aroostook Railroad in July 1981 as a mechanic and foreman. He also worked at the Portland Shipyard in his younger years.

He is survived by his wife of 73 years, Evelyn (Clewely) Burpee of Oakfield; three children, Sandra Holmes and David Burpee of Oakfield and Charles Burpee of Portland; nine grandchildren twenty-one great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his parents, one son, Merlin, a sister, Mary Labree and one great-granddaughter.

Friends may call 1-2 p.m. Friday at Bowers Funeral Home, Island Falls, where funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Interment will be in the Oakfield Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Legion Post #52, Oakfield, c/o Kerry Bartlett, Oakfield, ME 04763.
