- Maxine "Mike" Hazel Carter, 91, died peacefully on June 12th, 2017. Maxine was born on February 27th, 1926, in Milbridge, Maine and was the daughter of Charles and Jennie Burgess of Milbridge. Maxine packed sardines at Ray's Fishery for over fifty years of her life. At an early age, she raked blueberries on the barrens and made balsam wreaths every Christmas season. She was best known for her cooking and baking expertise. She could be found early in the morning in her kitchen, frying up homemade doughnuts before she even left for work. There was no greater joy in Maxine's life than her husband of sixty four years and her beloved family. She enjoyed gardening and spent many hours after the harvest canning vegetables for the Winter months. The holidays were special to her as it gave her a chance to cook and see all the children whom she loved dearly. She could be found on a Saturday night with her sisters playing Bingo and eating a red hot dog while sipping a cup of black coffee. Maxine was preceded in death by her husband, Willard Carter, her daughter, Cynthia Stanwood, and son, Willard Carter Jr., as well as four brothers and six sisters. She is survived by her sisters, Mary "Peggy" Freeman of Milbridge, Lottie Burgess of Milbridge, Victoria Batson of Addison, and Roberta Wynegar of South Carolina. Grandchildren, Stacie Stanwood-Young of Winter Harbor, Troy Stanwood of Steuben, and Tiffany Stanwood of Thorndike, Brenda Mobley of Casper, Wyoming, Kyle Carter of Spokane, Washington, Michael Carter of Nevada, and Steve Carter. She is also survived by eleven great-grandchildren and nine great-great-grandchildren. A service of remembrance will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, June 16th, 2017, at the Bragdon-Kelley Funeral Home, Milbridge, Maine.
