EAST MACHIAS - (LUND'S CORNER) - Maurice A. Lund, 93, died peacefully at at a Bangor hospital on April 30, 2014. He was born on November 13, 1920, the son of Horatio and Annie (Worrell) Lund. The 18th of 21 children (15 siblings and 5 half-siblings), Maurice stayed at his home on Lund's Corner long after his siblings left to marry, or pursue other vocations, to care for his ailing mother, Annie, whom he loved dearly.
Maurice was a hard worker who prided himself on neatness and order. He attended a one-room school in Plantation 14, walking two miles to school each day. He left early each morning as he was also the school janitor and had to get the fires started and water carried before the school day began. Maurice worked as a carpenter, a caretaker, a cook, a state highway truck driver, and picked blueberries well into his 90s. He was treasurer and town clerk, first selectman, town constable, and a school bus driver for 50 years. He started the Jacksonville Cemetery Association and spent many hours doing groundswork at the cemetery. Maurice had a passion for maintaining cemeteries, and until the aches and pains of old age set in he faithfully tended Plantation 14, Ellsmore, Jacksonville, and Marion Cemeteries. Maurice was a man who loved to keep busy and make things beautiful and orderly. He made beautiful hooked rugs, sometimes designing his own patterns. His stacks of wood were a beautiful site to behold. He was a wonderful cook, keeping his relatives running for the cupboard when they visited to feast on homemade donuts, fresh bread and blueberry pie. His flower and vegetable gardens were works of art, complimented on by family, friends, neighbors and strangers passing by.
Maurice is survived by his loving sister, Mary Campbell, who took care of him in his final years. He is also survived by a very special nephew, Leo Lund, and many nephews and nieces, cousins, and friends.
Maurice was welcomed into Heaven by his parents, Horatio and Annie Lund, and nineteen of his twenty siblings. Maurice enjoyed nothing more than the quiet, unassuming beauty of his home at Lund's Corner; visits from family, friends and complete strangers; and the peace of sitting on the porch and watching the beauty that God (and he) had created.
