- Maude Smith died March 31, 2017, at a Pittsfield hospital with her son by her side. She was born in Newport, the 7th child of Guy and Mabel (Prescott) Smith.
She graduated from Newport High School, Class of 1949. Maude "Maudie" was past president of the class and was past president of the Newport High School Alumni Association. She married Sidney Smith Jr. and had 2 sons. Maude worked for a time as a cashier at Golden's IGA Foodliner in Caribou, and later at the IGA and Bud's Shop 'n Save in Pittsfield. She was also a photographer for the Eastern Gazette and the Pittsfield Advertiser. She was a waitress at the Yankee Restaurant in Newport for many years. She knit many shawls, sweaters and mittens for the church and hospital. Maude loved games and keeping in touch with her family members on the computer. She always had a Chihuahua dog as a companion and also enjoyed sharing memories with loved ones and friends. She had a fulfilling life, will be truly missed and never forgotten. She was a member of the People's United Methodist Church, Nokomis Chapter, # 42, Order of The Eastern Star, Newport Senior Citizens, a 64 year member of Barrows-Skidgel American Legion Auxiliary, Unit 105, where she served as president and historian for many years, and a life member of the Lester Knowlton VFW # 9389 Auxiliary in Caribou.
She is survived by a son, David of Alabama and Newport; a sister, Janace Wesley of Florida; a brother and wife, Elden and Sylvia Tardy of Newport; 3 granddaughters, Dawn Smith and partner, David, of Virginia, Cassandra Dobson and husband, Rob, of Acton and Madison and husband, Eric Gray, of Windham; 4 great-grandchildren, Bennie, Hunter and Robby Dobson of Acton and Sidney Gray of Windham; many nieces and nephews. Maude was predeceased by her husband, Sidney; her son, Dorne; sisters, Helen Melanson, Mary Brewer and Ruth Emery; and brothers, Joseph, Norman and Raymond Tardy.
Graveside committal services will be held later in the spring at Riverside Cemetery, Newport. Arrangements are by Crosby & Neal, Newport. Those who wish may leave written condolences at www.CrosbyNeal.com.
