- Matt Kay, a recent resident of Newport, RI, passed away peacefully at Rhode Island Hospital on Wednesday morning, April 26th, at the age of 25, with his father David and best friend Jed Pearsall by his side.
Matt is the son of Mary M. (Pilkington) Kay (dec) and is survived by his father, David Edwin Kay of Wickford, RI, twin brother Andrew David Kay, sister-in-law Haley Kay, and nephew Landon Kay of Orono, Maine, sister Cara Lynne Kay of Las Vegas, Nevada, and his grandparents Edwin Kay and Judy Kay.
Matt was born in Providence, RI, on May 18th 1991, and lived in Smithfield, RI, for much of his life before relocating to Patten, ME. where he attended Katahdin High School as a member of the state championship winning varsity soccer team. Homeschooled by his mother for 10 years, he then went on to graduate Katahdin High in 2009 as class valedictorian after her passing, receiving a full scholarship to the University of Maine in Chemical Engineering for his academic achievements.
Matt worked for several years at Verizon as a corporate sales representative and most recently as a project manager at Performance Research in Newport, RI, helping to investigate and develop new software platforms for business efficiencies. Matt recently took an active interest in helping to solve homelessness and was considering pursuing a future career in that field.
Over the past few years Matt developed a keen interest in sailing and travel and could often be spotted aboard several notable boats on Narragansett Bay. After visiting Mexico and South America, he recently fulfilled his dream of visiting Cuba this past December.
Matt will be missed dearly by his family, friends, and canine companion, Teddy.
A private celebration of Matt Kay's life among his close friends and family will be held Saturday, May 6th, 2017 at the Newport home of Jed Pearsall and Bill Doyle. In lieu of flowers, donations in Matt's name may be made to Crossroads Rhode Island, a non-profit organization helping to end homelessness in RI.
