- Marylou Matthews, 70, died March 18, 2017, at a local hospital. She was born in Massachusetts on March 25, 1946, to Leno and Alice Corrieri.
Marylou grew up in Billerica and displayed her love of animals from an early age. She once liberated a neighbor's horse from its paddock and brought it home, convinced that she would offer better care. Marylou was a cowgirl at heart and a fan of Roy Rogers. Other childhood pursuits included anything the neighborhood boys were doing, horseback riding and figure skating. After graduation, she worked at the Lahey Clinic in Boston as a lab technician. Marylou moved to Southwest Harbor in 1980, when her daughter was in the fourth grade. She began working in the resource room at Pemetic Elementary School soon after. Marylou went on to become the school secretary at Pemetic, where she improved and influenced the lives of many students for more than twenty-five years until her retirement in 2012. Marylou's office was a place of acceptance and sanctuary for countless students. She tended the sick, fed the hungry, soothed the nervous, comforted the misunderstood and always with straightforward good cheer. She provided support and guidance for four principals and dozens of teachers and staff.
Marylou served as an EMT for the Southwest Harbor Ambulance for several years, was a life-long fan of the Boston Red Sox, and worked with local animal shelters. She was open-minded, generous, courageous and very good company.
Marylou is survived by her daughter, Melissa Farley; her sister, Nancy Cerato and husband, Onorio; her brother, Bobby Corrieri and wife, Barbara; her cousin, Judy Corrieri; several nieces and nephews; and a special great-nephew, Michael Johnson. She is also survived by an entire community who are grateful for her presence. She was predeceased by her parents; and her son-in-law, Corey Farley.
At Marylou's request, there will be no service. There will be a gathering at a later date to celebrate her life.
