Mary's Story

Mary Pomeroy Wheeler, 90, went to be with her Lord on August 3, 2016. She was born on January 13, 1926, in Jersey City, New Jersey, the daughter of Edna Bell Staats and Chauncey Goodwin Pomeroy.

She was a registered nurse for fifty-four years working in several states throughout her career. She graduated in 1947 from the nursing program at Middlesex General in New Brunswick, New Jersey. During her nursing career she was instrumental in opening the cardiac care unit at Pen-Bay Medical Center in Rockport, Maine. Being a woman of strong faith, Mary cherished the opportunity she had to truly love and care for her patients. In 1963, Mary attended Glen Cove Bible College in Rockland, Maine, where she took several Bible classes. Over the next twenty years she taught Sunday school in both Rockland and Orrington, Maine where she and her husband moved in 1979.

Mary was a devoted wife and mother who loved her family very much. Mary was predeceased by her husband of sixty-one years, Lewis Dexter Wheeler. She is survived by three children, a daughter, Susan P. Wheeler of Orrington, and grandchildren, Barbara Presswood of Texas, Jody Dupuis of Hampden, and Richard England III of Bangor; a daughter, Leslie W. England and husband, Randy of Orrington, and grandchildren, Angela Mock of Pennsylvania, Christopher Rowell of Lamoine, and Jaime Shorey of Bangor; and a son, William J. Wheeler of Orrington, and grandchildren, Kellie Sorah of Alabama, Benjamin Wheeler of Arizona, and Eric Wheeler, Seth Wheeler and Shelby Wheeler of Orrington. She was also survived by ten great-grandchildren.

A funeral service will be held at Maine Coast Baptist Church, 867 Bangor Road, Ellsworth, Maine on Saturday, October 1, 2016, at 10 am. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Mary's memory to WHCF, P.O. Box 5000, Bangor, Maine 04402.

Arrangements are under the care of Riposta Funeral Home, 182 Waldo Avenue, Belfast, Maine. Mary's family would like to give our heartfelt thanks to all who cared for her at the Maine Veteran's Home.
