EXETER - Mary Mincher Talbot of Exeter, New Hampshire, died quietly at home on January 23, 2015, at the age of 82, surrounded by her loving family.
Mary was born in Waterville, Maine and grew up in Bangor. A brilliant student with a sharp wit and an inquisitive mind, she never stopped learning. She was an accomplished scholar, graduating with highest honors from the University of Maine in 1957, where she was a member of the Phi Beta Kappa and Phi Kappa Phi honor societies and the Phi Mu sorority before earning a fellowship in History at the University of Illinois.
No matter where her marriage and travels took her, she always sought out new ways to expand her intellectual horizons. She held a variety of professional positions throughout her life, including Editor of the Aurora Lamplighter newspaper, Assistant to the Superintendent of Glastonbury Public Schools, and Human Resources Analyst at Connecticut Mutual Life Insurance. She was also an active volunteer with the League of Women Voters and relished nothing more than a good political debatein which she usually prevailed.
In 1980, Mary and her husband, James, relocated to Paris, France. She embraced her new life, immersing herself in all aspects of French culture, language, and art and traveling extensively throughout the rest of Europe. As a member of the American Women's Group of Paris, she was head of advertising for their monthly bulletin, converting it to a profitable fundraising initiative.
Mary was an enthusiastic gardener, which she especially enjoyed at their home in Normandy. During her many years in France, she also developed an interest in antiquing and the craft of picture framing. She was an avid reader of fiction and non-fiction alike and dearly loved animals, particularly cats. Advancing years did nothing to slow her intellect; instead, she developed an aptitude for technology and spent many hours learning about and working on her computer, tablet, and smartphone, even helping her friends and family master their own devices.
She is survived by her husband of 56 years, James J. Talbot, and her daughters, Elisabeth Talbot McHugh and her husband, David, of Hingham, MA; Leslie A. Talbot of Boston, MA; and Leigh M. Talbot of Alexandria, VA. Daughter of George E. and Elisabeth C. Mincher and beloved Aunt to Elisabeth Curran, Susan Van Allen, Jayne Winters, and John Mincher, she will also be missed by many great nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by her brothers, William Mincher and John Mincher and their wives, Geraldine and Florence.
Memorial services will be held at a later date. Brewitt Funeral Home, 14 Pine St., Exeter, NH is assisting the family with the arrangements.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to: The Mary Mincher Talbot Scholarship Fund, University of Maine Foundation, Two Alumni Place, Orono, ME 04469-5792.
