ORRINGTON - Mary Darilyn (Weymouth) Stevens, passed peacefully April 24, 2015 at home surrounded by her beloved family. Mary was born September 17, 1926, in Rumford to the late Vera E. (Jordan) Weymouth and Merle P. Weymouth.

She is predeceased by her brothers Richard and Jack and her husband of 63 years, Daniel J. Stevens. She will be sadly missed by her eight children Carrie A., Mark D., Jeffery J., Mary E., Joel A.W., Aaron R.L., Peggy R. and Julia C. and their spouses. Mary is also survived by her brother-in-law, Norman Stevens and sisters-in-law, Cathy Weymouth and Beverly Weymouth, 15 grandchildren, 9 great grandchildren, and nieces and nephews, whom she dearly loved.

As a young woman, Mary spent many happy summers with her family at the Girl Scout Camp Natarswi. She later became a camp counselor and the first ever woman Junior Maine Guide. Mary was an avid outdoor sports enthusiast, especially hiking, cross country skiing, swimming, camping, canoeing and kayaking. Mary was a long-time swimming instructor at the Nickerson Pool in Orono, where she taught a generation of children to swim. Mary attended the University of Maine where she was a member of the Sophomore Owls Society, an honors organization dedicated to community service at UMaine and surrounding communities. She received her bachelor's degree in Sociology from UMO in 1948 and went on to have a fulfilling teaching career. Mary was a devout Catholic. She loved people, especially children. She was a faithful friend and enjoyed celebrating. She loved to read and she was a life-long learner, for example, learning and teaching braille to the blind. Mary had an exceptional zest for life. As well as being an avid volunteer, she contributed passionately to many social and community causes. Perhaps her most crowning achievements were instilling a strong work ethic in her children, having an adventurous spirit for travel, and a thirst for continuous growth and learning. Most of all, Mary Stevens was the best mother her children could have ever been blessed with and their greatest champion and supporter.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 1:00 PM Friday, May 1, 2015 at St. Paul the Apostle Parish, St. Teresa's Catholic Church, So. Main St., Brewer. Burial will be at a later date.
