Mary's Story

STEUBEN - Mary Blanche Smeal, 83, passed away in Bangor, February 21, 2016. Mary was born July 3, 1938, to Nellie and Frank Downs at their home in Silver Springs, Maryland.

For many years as a military wife she traveled the world with her husband, Wayne, and four children, living through one of the worst typhoons in the history of Guam. Her travels took her to many places, including West Virginia, California, Philippines, Japan and Germany. In 1965 they settled in Steuben, where in the 1980s she began working at the Milbridge Nursing Home as a dietary aid, and treated the residents and her co-workers as extended family members for 28 years until her illness forced her to retire. She was known as "Ma" to all grandkids, neighbors and friends. Everyone called her Ma. She was known for her kindness, feisty spirit, stubbornness, her love of cooking, beano, crocheting and always helping others. She had a passion for football season, a very big fan of the Patriots, never missing a game or bet with her grandson.

Mary "Ma" will be remembered for her love of family and the one that held us all together. She is survived by her sisters, Annah, Frannie and Catherine; her children, Nancy Parrit and husband, Irvin "Bub" Parritt, Wayne "Joey" Smeal Jr., Cathy Smeal, David Smeal and significant other, Shirley Newenham, and Christopher Smeal; grandchildren, Wayne Parritt and companion, Patty Newenham, Mike Parritt and companion, Amber Newenham, Jennifer Parritt and companion, David Deniger, Brenton Parritt and companion, Katti Meeks, Marion Smith and husband, Joe, Della Willey and husband, Josh, William and Robbie Smeal, Randy Smeal and companion, Angela Seavey and Sarah Nicholas and Ashley Oleson; great-grandkids, Bunk, Heather, Megan, Ashley, Lila, Bryson, Bristol and Benson Parritt, Munch Sargent, Brett and Ryan Denier, Harlee, Sophia and Maddox Donovan, Haley, Cameron, Autumn, Emma, Britton and Kenzie Smeal, Joseph, Jenna and Jacob Smith, Zachary and Tessa Ray, Roman Willey; great-great-grandchildren, Braydon and Kaydence Parritt, Danika and Aspen Sargent and Caydence Reynolds; and special friends she considered family, Bruce Oleson and Mary Newenham.
