BANGOR and SANGERVILLE - Mary Evangeline "Vanny" Drew, 93, passed away August 9, 2014, at the Maine Veterans Home. She was born September 4, 1920, in Sangerville, Maine, the daughter of George R. and Emma Adelle (Wentworth) Ronco.
After graduating from Sangerville High School, Mary and her sister Pauline moved to Bridgeport, CT in 1943 to work at Chance Vought, helping to make the Navy fighter, the Corsair. In 1944, Mary enlisted in the Army Air Corps, and was stationed at Bradley Field in CT. While on pass in Bridgeport, she met her husband, LeRoy Drew; they were married July 16, 1945. Mary served for the duration of the war and went on to a 35-year career as a full-time nursing assistant and geriatric aide while raising her two daughters and caring for her husband and home. She lived in CT until Roy died in 1984, when she returned to Maine to care for her ailing father.
Mary or Vanny, as she was known to many of her Maine family and friends - was a member of South Sangerville Grange since she was a teenager. She loved growing vegetables and flowers and always had a garden until illness forced her to stop. From the time she was a young child she loved reading, especially mysteries and the Northwestern adventures of James Oliver Curwood. Mary also enjoyed crocheting and would produce beautiful afghans for family and friends to enjoy.
Mary is survived by her daughter, Cheryl Closson, and sons-in-law John Closson and Tony Rocco, all of Bangor, and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. In addition to her parents, Mary was predeceased by her beloved husband, Roy, daughter Sandra Rocco, brothers Francis and Robert, and sister, Pauline Caisse. Graveside services will be held at 11:00 AM Thursday, August 14, 2014 at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery, Dexter, ME. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the Bangor Salvation Army, 65 S.
