Mary Ellen (DeWitt) Farnsworth
Mar 20, 1946 - Jan 27, 2017
Beloved, Mother, Sister, Friend
- Mary E. Farnsworth born March 20th, 1946 the daughter of Robert L. DeWitt and Alice M. (Sargent) DeWitt.
Mary graduated from Ellsworth High School in 1964, and was very proud that she was chosen to represent the school for Allstate Chorus. Her love for music and singing followed her throughout her life. Many road trips with the family were spent singing everything from Folk music to Hymns to Abba and the Oak Ridge Boys.
In 1966 Mary married Darrell Farnsworth. They raised three children during their 38 year marriage. They made their home in Cherryfield after a couple of years in Millinocket.
Mary worked for years as a bookkeeper. She spent a great number of those years taking care of the paperwork and designing log cabin kits for a saw mill business she and Darrell purchased in the early 70's. When the business ended she worked for the Harrington Family Health Center and finished her working days with a retirement from the Addison Town Office in 2013.
Mary was an extremely talented and artistic person. She loved painting, ceramics, making jewelry, flower arranging, knitting sweaters for her grandkids and in her day her seamstress abilities were phenomenal. Her love for sewing began when she use to make clothes for her Barbie dolls and that love continued in the many dresses and prom gowns she made for Billie Jo and in the many costumes she made for the boys and Brittany. The lobster costumes for Danny and Wayne will never be forgotten. The porcupine costume for Chris and the Hershey kiss for Brittany are all still in the memory bank after all these years. Mom would also make May Day baskets and deliver them to the local nursing homes so that all the residents could have one, that's just how kind her heart was.
Mom and Dad loved kids, three wasn't enough. The Farnsworth home was a gathering spot for many neighborhood kids. Some of those kids became "adopted children." It was not uncommon to have at least 2 extras with us on family vacations and camping trips. Mom was also a Girl Scout leader for more than 10 years. Many of her artistic talents were lovingly passed on to the girls in her troop.
Our mother was a kind-hearted soul. I do not know a person who would not say that they did not love Mary.
She leaves behind not just friends and family, but a community. We pray she is now with her parents and her beloved son Christopher. Until we meet again, rest in peace Mom.
In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by the father of her children Darrell; their son Christopher, her sister Barbara, her nephew Mark Austin.
