Mary's Story

BAR HARBOR - Mary Keene Brown, 82, died December 15, 2014 at MDI Hospital. Mary was born June 8, 1932 in Bar Harbor the daughter of Henry Otis Keene and Addie S. Keene Paine.

Mary graduated from Bar Harbor High School in 1950. Mary worked at the First National Bank of Bar Harbor until her first child was born and then she became a full time homemaker. She returned to work, after her children were grown, at the family business H.A. Brown Furniture Company. Mary was involved in many local organizations including the YWCA of

Bar Harbor, the Bar Harbor Historical Society, where she was a board member, the MDI Hospital Ladies Auxiliary and the Bar Harbor Congregational Church. Mary and Henry were the first couple married in the church after it was rebuilt. Mary spent time during the summer and fall at their cabin in Lamoine overlooking Eastern Bay, where she enjoyed gardening, watching the boats go by and especially enjoyed

the fall foliage. Mary also enjoyed spending time with her family.

Mary is survived by her beloved husband of 63 years, Henry W. Brown. Her four children: Henry A. Brown and his wife Cheri, Stephen Brown and his wife Linda, all of Bar Harbor, Ellen Brown-Bucknell and husband Ray of Gorham and Beth Murphy and husband Kevin of Lamoine. Eight grandchildren: Taylor and Chase Brown of Bar Harbor, Jordan Brown serving in the Army overseas, Shawn Murphy of Lamoine, Nathan, Adam and Travis Bucknell of Gorham and Vanessa Brown of Winterport. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews. Mary was predeceased by her parents and her four sisters: Elizabeth, Charlotte, Barbara and Alice and her five brothers: Oliver, Otis, William, Robert and Royal.

Graveside services will be held at East Lamoine Cemetery in the spring. There will be no visiting hours. In lieu of flowers, gifts in her memory may be sent to the YWCA, Mount Desert Street, Bar Harbor, ME 04609.
