Martha's Story

MONTVILLE AND BANGOR - Martha A. Thornhill, 88, of Montville and Bangor, loving Wife, Mother, and Grandmother, died January 23, 2015 at a Bangor nursing home. She was born in Keene, NH, the daughter of Rev. Joseph D. and Esther E. Haynes.

After graduating from high school, Martha graduated from Northwood Narrows Bible School in Northwood Narrows, NH. Martha was married to Rev. James H. Thornhill for 28 years. Together they raised four children, and worked tirelessly to run the family's farm. Martha was well-known for many miles around for her homemade cottage cheese and butter. She enjoyed farm life. Her sheep were her "babies", and they, along with the other animals, received much love from her.

In addition to her parents, Martha was predeceased by her husband and one brother. Surviving are her three sons, James, Joseph, and Jonathan, one daughter, Naomi Patten and her husband John, six grandchildren: Christopher Patten and his wife Katie and an expected great grandson, John Andrew Patten on February 6, 2015; Stephanie Patten; Jordan Thornhill; Kaylie Thornhill; Samantha Thornhill; and Joshua Thornhill; two brothers, one sister, two sisters-in-law, a brother-in-law, many nieces and nephews, a stepdaughter and 4 step-grandchildren.

There will be a graveside memorial at the family's burial site on the farm in Montville that Martha loved so much. There will be a Celebration of Life in the spring.
