NEWBURYPORT AND CASTINE - Marjorie (Leach) Babcock, age 91, beloved teacher, passed peacefully Friday morning, January 2, 2015 at Anna Jaques Hospital in Newburyport, MA, with her family by her side. She was the devoted wife of the late Philip B. Babcock, who died in 1993.
Born in Castine, Maine, July 21, 1923, she was one of five children of the late Maxwell E. and Gertrude B. (Bowden) Leach. Marj was the salutatorian of Castine High School, class of 1940 and went on to graduate from the Eastern State Normal School, earning her degree in Elementary Education. For twenty-nine years she was the beloved fifth and sixth grade teacher at the Adams School in Castine. After her retirement, she volunteered at the George Stevens Academy in Blue Hill, Maine.
Marj was a very active member of the Castine community, where she was a member of the Castine Unitarian Church and past Chair of its Alliance, a longtime volunteer at the Witherle Memorial Library, a member of the Castine Planning Board, and active with the Cold Comfort Players and the Bagaduce Chorale.
During her years in Newburyport, she was a member of the First Religious Society and volunteered for the American Red Cross and the Cape Ann Waldorf School. Marj loved to travel and had been to Europe several times. She enjoyed the theater, board games, cross word puzzles, and was an avid fan of the Boston Red Sox, but especially she was a voracious reader from an early age.
Her survivors include her daughter, Patricia B. Harris and spouse Deborah I. Silverman of Brunswick, ME; her son, the Rev. Harold E. Babcock and wife Sabrina of West Newbury; four grandchildren, whom she adored, Joshua P. Babcock and Benjamin Babcock and wife Jordan all of Amesbury; John R. Brookhouse and wife Jennifer Radda of Somerville, and Katherine Karlsson of West Boylston; as well as two great-grandsons, Samuel and Luke Babcock, and several generations of nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents and her husband, she was predeceased by her two brothers, Edward and Leland Leach and her two sisters, Janet Barry and Miriam Leach.
Visiting hours at Elliott, Woodworth & Rogers Family Funeral Home, 35 Green Street, Newburyport, will be Tuesday, January 6, 2015 from 5 to 7 P.M. A "Celebration of Life" will he held Wednesday, January 7, 2015 at 11 A.M. at the First Religious Society Unitarian Universalist Church, 26 Pleasant Street, Newburyport with Rev. Frank Clarkson. There will be another service and interment in Castine at a later date. Donations in her memory may be made to the First Religious Society, 26 Pleasant Street, Newburyport, MA 01950.
