Mar 19, 1939 - Mar 11, 2017
- Marie J. (Viola) Astle, 77, died peacefully, Saturday, March 11, 2017, at Gardiner Health Care Facility. She was born March 19, 1939, in Somerville, Massachusetts, the daughter of Giuseppe and Olga (Molino) Viola.
On July 20, 1958, Marie married Harold Astle and moved to Houlton, Maine. Marie was a full-time mother during her children's early years. She later worked in the food industry in restaurants and the school cafeteria programs until her retirement in 2011. As her children grew up, Marie's yard was the hub of activity for the neighborhood children. On any given day there were countless games of baseball or kickball going on. Marie loved to spend time with her family and friends, including her "extended family" and life-time friend Isabella Broder and her family. Marie loved to bake, cook and took great pride in preparing and eating her ancestral Italian food. Her favorite meal was the "Seven Fishes" which she cooked and served on Christmas Eve. Marie also loved to garden, sew, quilt, shop and travel in her free-time. In 2004, she fulfilled her life-long dream of visiting and touring Italy with family.
She is survived by four children, David Astle and wife, Kathleen McCormick, of Houlton and their children, Ian, Samuel and Thomas, Anthony Astle and wife, Laura Johns, of Richmond, VA, Joanne Kosakowski and husband, Mark, of Queensbury, NY and their children, Peter and Marlee, and Lisa Duff and husband, Kevin, of Houlton and their three children, Thomas, Katelyn and Alaina; two sisters, Linda Viola and Joanne Puopolo and husband, Joseph, of Attleboro, MA; sisters-in-law, Marie Viola of Norwell, MA, and Ann Lynch of Reseda, CA; several nephews and nieces; and her beloved dog, "Buddy."
