Margaret's Story

TIMBERLAKE, NC - Margaret K Gilman, a resident of Timberlake, NC died September 4, 2015 at age 88. Margaret was born to Ralph C. and Mary R. Ketchen. She grew up in Old Town, Maine and graduated from Old Town High School and the University of Maine. Margaret married Harold F Gilman on June 20, 1949.

Margaret was primarily a homemaker but also worked for several years as a forestry draftswoman, She enjoyed cooking her specialty dishes which were often requested by her children, friends, and grandchildren. She was an avid reader and enjoyed doing jigsaw, Sudoku and NY Times crossword puzzles in her later years. She relished her independence and was able to live in her home until the week of her death. There she delighted in watching deer, birds, and other wildlife in her rural neighborhood. Above all, she loved her family and was eager to visit those in Maine and other states, as well as to welcome those visiting her in North Carolina.

Margaret was predeceased by her husband Harold, son Matthew, and sister Elizabeth Phelps. She is survived by her sister Patricia (Ronald) Dorsky; children Catherine (Gordon) Lav'in, Richard (Jill) Gilman and Judith Wilcox; and daughter-in law Shelley Gilman. Grandchildren include Caroline and Catherine Neyland, Kyle (Lindsay) Lavin and Cora Lavin, Ryan and Christopher Gilman, Jenifer and Erick Gilman, a nd Emily Wilcox. Great grandchildren include Kathleen Lavin and Aurora Gilman. Margaret is also survived by many nieces and nephews and their families.

A memorial service will held at a later date. Interment will be at the Veteran's Memorial Cemetery in Augusta, Maine.

The family would like to express appreciation to the physicians and staffs of Duke University Hospital, Duke HomeCare, and Durham Internal Medicine for their excellent care and support for Margaret during her brief illness. Special thanks to Dr Trig Brown of Duke Palliative Care for his kindness and assistance to Margaret and to the family before and after her death.
