Margaret's Story

BEALS - Margaret E. (Phinney) Beal, 83, passed away peacefully at EMMC, Bangor, surrounded by her loved ones on April 8, 2015. She was born on March 17, 1932, in Southwest Harbor, Maine, the daughter of Harvard and Bertha (Norwood) Phinney.

After moving to Milbridge, Maine, she desired to go to school to become a nurse, but at the age of 11 her parents required her to help raise her younger siblings (she completed 7 years of education). She worked her parents farm, cleaned homes and packed sardines, asking for only enough money for cigarettes and a movie. She gathered friends wherever she went as she had a wonderful sense of humor and quick wit. She had a giving heart, asking nothing in return.

She moved to Beals Island, after marrying her love, John W. Beal Sr. and bared 5 children. She attended the Beals Wesleyan Church for many years and worked beside her fisherman husband. She shelled clams at the local clam shed. Margaret loved her immediate family and her extended family, as she put claim to anyone she befriended. She loved being near the water, playing bingo, basketball, horse shoes, pool or any game kids would play.

She is survived by her children, John Beal Jr. and wife, Leanne, James Beal Sr. and wife, Sara, Mercy Beal and wife, (DAUGHTER to Margaret) Rebecca Lombard, Inez Frazier and husband, (SON to Margaret) John; 12 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren; and sister, Ethelyn Willey of Florida. She was predeceased by her parents, her husband; son, Alvin; brothers, John and Alvin Phinney; sisters, Sophia Torrey, Celia Kennedy, Sylvia Brooks and Dorothy Peabody; granddaughter, Riya Beal; and "special" daughter-in-law, Hattie.

Graveside services will be held on June 26, 2015, at 2 p.m. at Great Wass Cemetery, Beals, Maine. In lieu of flowers, please make donations in her memory to NBHCF-Residential Center (Bingo Fund), 3 Main Street, Milbridge, ME 04658. Arrangements by Bragdon-Kelley Funeral Home, Machias.
