OLD TOWN - Madeline Ella Smith, 75, died September 26, 2014 surrounded by family at her daughter's home. She was born February 20, 1939 in Passadumkeag, a daughter of Burleigh "Harry" and Ella (Bryant) Sibley.
Madeline was an avid Bingo player and enjoyed playing cards with family and friends. She served as past president of the American Legion Ladies Auxiliary. She enjoyed visiting family at camp and going on many trips with the Old Town Senior Citizens. She will be remembered for her love of crafts and knitting.
She is survived by a daughter, Sue Sapiel and her husband, David of Indian Island; two sons, David Simon and his wife, Donna of Bradley and Daniel Simon of Old Town; four grandchildren, David Sapiel Jr and his girlfriend, Allyson, Krystal Sapiel, Marccus Sapiel, and Jessy Armstrong; sister, Julia Hayes, brother, Harry Sibley, her first husband and father of her children, James Simon, several; nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, George Smith; four sisters, Betty Stoddard, Fern Stoddard, Rosalind Stoddard, Flossie Hutchinson, and a very special and close friend, Carolyn Cust.
The family wishes to send a special and heartfelt thank you to the staff of the Lafayette Cancer Center and to hospice of Eastern Maine for the wonderful and compassionate care shown to Madeline and the family.
A graveside service will be conducted 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Joseph Cemetery, Old Town. Immediately following the service all are invited to the Holy Family Parish Hall for a light luncheon.
