M.'s Story

BANGOR - M. Eleanor McCloskey, beloved mother and grandmother, passed away peacefully on February 11, 2016 at the age of 94.

She was born in Bangor in 1921 to John McCarthy and Lillian E. Connelly. Eleanor was valedictorian at John Bapst High School, and she graduated from the University of Maine with a bachelor's degree in Business Administration in 1943. She married Hugh "Frank" McCloskey, Jr. in 1944. After raising three children she began work for the Maine Department of Human Services as a Child Protective worker and supervisor. She was a fearless advocate for the children whose lives she protected.

She is survived by her sons John and Jay and their wives, Barbara and Nancy; her daughter Susan; her grandchildren Sean, Sharlene, Abby, Lily, and Jack; and her great-grandchildren, Hannah, Emma, Annika, Conor, and Sasha.

Friends may call at the Greenlawn Funeral Home, 300 State Street Bangor from 6 to 8 PM on Thursday, February 18th. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at St. John's Catholic Church at 10 AM on Friday, February 19th. The family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to St. Jude's Children's research 501 St. Jude's Place Memphis, TN 38105.
