CHICAGO, CASTINE AND HAMPDEN - Lydia Theresa (Herling) Howard, 93, passed away January 20, 2015 after a period of declining health at a local nursing home. She was born December 2, 1921 in Chicago, Illinois the daughter of Adolph and Theresa (Mohr) Herling.
Lydia grew up and was educated in Chicago, Illinois. It was there she met her future husband, Sanger W. Howard. In 1952 they moved to Castine, where Sanger was originally from, to raise their two children. Lydia enjoyed cooking, sewing, crafts, picnics on Ram Island and mackerel fishing in Penobscot Bay. She was employed by the U. S. Postal Department for over 20 years, retiring in 1981 as the Post Master of Castine, Maine.
She is survived by a son, Raymond Howard, and his wife, Susan; a son-in-law, Roland Hutchins, Sr.; six grandchildren, Roland Hutchins, Jr., Katrina Norwood, Heidi Belle-Isle, Eric Hutchins, Brian Howard, and Amy Bois; ten great-grandchildren; three great-great grandchildren; two sisters; and a brother-in-law. She was predeceased by her husband, Sanger; her daughter, Charlann Hutchins; a brother, sister-in-law and two brothers-in-law.
A graveside service will be held this summer in Castine. The family greatly appreciates the care given to Lydia by the nursing staff at Ross Manor and Beacon Hospice.
