Lunette's Story

SWAN'S ISLAND - Lunette C. Smith, 94, of Swan's Island passed away peacefully Sunday, April 20, 2014, in Bar Harbor at Sonogee Rehabilitation and Living Center.

Lunette was born in Everett MA, Dec 31, 1919, the daughter of Mildred (Conary) and Everett Nelson.

She grew up in So. Portland and attended schools there. She married Oakley (Jerry) Smith and moved to Swan's Island, where she had formerly summered with her grandparents, her aunts and their families.

She was a life-long member of the Swan's Island Methodist Church and an enthusiastic member of the Baptist Ladies Aide. She was known for her beautiful perennial garden that was her passion for 40 years. She started her plants by seed; her dining room was a virtual greenhouse very Spring. She enjoyed quilting and taking long walks. She made a mean glazed donut. She loved to tell stories, laugh and spend time with her girlfriends.

She loved her family dearly, especially her 4 grandchildren. She was the best Nana that anyone could wish for. She was predeceased by her parents, her husband and her grandson, Oakley. She is survived by her son Jerry Smith, her daughter Susan Smith, and her grandchildren Gerri Lynn Smith, Christina Maisano and Brian Stoehr. She also leaves her brother Lerman Thompson. She will be dearly missed by many including Nancy Carter and her special friend, cousin and life-long companion Josephine Swann.

There will be a memorial service on Saturday, Aug 2nd at the Swan's Island Methodist Church. All are welcome to come and celebrate a well lived life and to remember Lunette.
