Greenville - Lionel Joseph Breau, 91, son of Hector and Madeline (Comeau) Breau died December 27, 2016. He was employed by Atlas Plywood Mill at 16, then entered military service, proudly serving his country in WWII as 3rd gunner with the Army 86th Blackhawk division in the European Theater of Operations and with Pacific Theater Occupation Forces in the Philippines after the bombing of Japan. He received a Bronze Star for his service.
Following the war, Lionel married Theresa Dufour of Stockholm, Maine; they raised a fine family and enjoyed a 69 year marriage. He was again employed by Atlas Plywood and later worked for Scott Paper Company until his retirement. Lionel was a devoted Catholic, serving as an altar boy when young and later as usher during the weekly masses at Holy Family Catholic Church. He was an active member of American Legion Post No. 94, supporting activities and programs for 35 years. He enjoyed time with family and friends and was loved by all who knew him.
Lionel is survived by wife, Theresa; three children, Darrell and wife, Dorothy, Wayne and wife, Sandy, Deborah and husband, Bruce; six grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and brothers, David and Pat Breau. He was pre-deceased by brothers, George, Henry, Hank and Hector and two sisters, Victorina and Lena.
There will be a memorial gathering at the American Legion Post No. 94 at a later date and a memorial mass in Greenville with burial at the Maine Veterans' Cemetery in Augusta in the spring. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Holy Family Church Building Fund, PO Box 457, Greenville, Maine, 04441. Arrangements are in the care of the Lary Funeral Home, Greenville.
