MONMOUTH - Linwood K. Oakes Sr., "Oaksie," 79, died Friday afternoon, May 6, 2016, surrounded by his loving family at his home in Monmouth. He was born May 24, 1936, in Bradley, the son of Clarence and Ruby Niles Oakes.
Linwood graduated from Old Town High School in 1954. On September 4, 1965, in Bangor, he married Marilyn Given. He worked for the State of Maine, DHHS for 35 years retiring in 2008; he worked as a counselor for alcohol and drug abuse prevention. Linwood enjoyed NASCAR, golfing and playing his guitar for relaxation. He was a 50-year member of AA.
Linwood is survived by his wife, Marilyn Oakes of Monmouth; his daughter, Belinda Esancy and John of Augusta; 3 sons, David Oakes of Richmond, Kenneth Oakes and his wife, Jamie, of Greene and Linwood Oakes Jr. and his wife, Dorinda, of Kentucky; 8 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his parents; and a son, Greg Oakes.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Friday, May 13, at Gracelawn Memorial Park, 980 Turner Street, Auburn, hours will be 12:00 to 1 p.m. prior to the service. Interment will be at Gracelawn Memorial Park. If desired, contributions may be made to Androscoggin Home Care and Hospice, 15 Strawberry Avenue, Lewiston, ME 04240.
