PORTLAND - Lillian Louise Ewing, 99, beloved wife of 73 years to Thomas Ewing, died peacefully, May 27, 2014 at Seaside Rehabilitation, where she was recovering from a recent fall. She was born in West Enfield, April 4, 1915 to Louis and Jennie Bowker Leveille.
She graduated from Howland High School where she was a standout basketball player. Lillian married Thomas in 1941 and spent the next several years travelling with her three children across the United State and Germany as a proud Army wife and mother. When Thomas retired from the Army in 1957, the family settled in Portland where Thomas finished his career at Coles Express and Lillian continued to care for her children. They spent many happy summers together in Five Islands, Nova Scotia. Following retirement in 1976, Lillian and Thomas moved to Rainbow Village in Zephyrhills, Florida where they spent the next 35 years in the company of many special friends and neighbors. They enjoyed their trips each summer driving back to Maine and Nova Scotia to visit family and friends. Lillian faithfully watched the Red Sox and was proud to be one of the few fans alive in 1918 who had the privilege to witness the Red Sox win again in 2004. Enjoyable times for her included playing Beano, sitting side by side with her husband watching their favorite shows, visiting Busch Gardens and Disney, shopping, dining out and sharing stories with family and friends. Their friends would often find them both asleep in their chairs with the TV on. Although Lillian fell just shy of reaching her goal of living until the age of 100 so she could see her picture on a Smuckers jar, she was able to live happily and independently with her devoted husband until her recent fall.
In addition to her parents, Lillian was predeceased by her brothers, Louis Leveille, Lloyd Leveille, Reginald Leveille, Franklin Leveille, Clyde Leveille, and her sister, Donna Tash. She is survived by her husband, Thomas; her two brothers, Wayne Leveille and wife, Noreen, and Blaine Leveille; her son, Robert Ewing and wife, Shar, son, Thomas Ewing Jr. and daughter, Sharon Lynch and husband, Walter. She is also survived by her grandchildren including Jennifer Bisson, Robert Ewing Jr., Susan Clark, Brendan Lestage, James Lynch, Michael Lynch, Thomas Lynch, Heather Brooks, and Anthony Ewing. She also leaves behind 16 great-grandchildren, 6 great-great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
The family would like to extend a special thanks to Seaside where she was cared for by the loving staff, especially Jessica, Danielle, Keith, Breanna, Nicole, and Dr. Morrione who treated Lillian with dignity and respect.
A graveside service will be held 1 p.m. Friday, June 6 at the West Enfield Cemetery. To share memories and condolences with the family, please go to www.athutchins.com
