Letha's Story

Brewer - Letha B. Spofford, 84, died September 1, 2016, at a Bangor hospital. She was born April 14, 1932, in Stonington, the daughter of Charles and Winifred (Shepard) Barbour.
Letha graduated from Stonington High School, class of 1950. She was the organist at the RLDS church for 50 years, a task she started when she was just 9 years old. On November 8, 1952, she married the love of her life, Wayne Spofford. Together they raised their family. Letha worked for Maine Information Systems for 18 years. She loved to go camping at Bar Harbor Campground. She enjoyed knitting, coloring in the adult style coloring books, and playing the organ whenever she had an opportunity. Family was her life, and her grandchildren and great grandchildren were her pride and joy.
In addition to her parents, Letha was predeceased by 2 daughters, Sally and Sherri. She is survived by Wayne, her husband of nearly 64 years; children, Kerry Spofford and wife, Pamela, Tamra Jamieson and husband, Jerry, Barry Spofford and wife, Cathi, and Donald Spofford and wife, Faye; grandchildren, Elissa McCall, Kimberly Lorenz, Renee Giguere, Julie Pace, Courtney Carter, Matthew Spofford and Meghan Spofford; great-grandchildren, William, Molly, Kelsey, Caden, Waylon, Danielle, Clara, Prestyn and Kaylob; 2 sisters, Joanne Wilson and Faye Faulkingham; former son-in-law, Allen Doll; and several nieces and nephews. The family would like to give special thanks to the staffs at Winterberry Heights and Eastern Maine Medical Center for their exceptional care of our Mom.
Relatives and friends are welcome to call 5-7 p.m. Tuesday, September 6, 2016, at the Brewer Chapel of Brookings-Smith, 55 So. Main St., Brewer. A funeral service will be held 1 p.m. Wednesday, September 7, at the East Orrington Congregational Church, 38 Johnson Mill Rd., Orrington, with the Rev. Carl B. Schreiber officiating. Interment will be private. The family invites relatives and friends to share conversation and refreshments downstairs at the church immediately following the service. Those who wish to remember Letha in a special way may make gifts in her memory to the Sherri Spofford Memorial Scholarship.
