NEWPORT, AR - Mr. Leslie "Les" Wayne Phillips of Newport, Arkansas, departed this life on Saturday, June 18, 2016 at the age of 67. He was born February 2, 1949 in Bangor, Maine, the son of Bertrand E. and Marjorie D. (Bigelow) Phillips.
Mr. Phillips was a 1967 graduate of Bangor High School, and earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering from University of Maine in 1971. He worked for six different steel mills over the course of his life, starting at U.S. Steel after college, and ending at Arkansas Steel in Newport. He called himself a "Mill Haukie." Mr. Phillips was Executive Vice President and C.O.O. of Arkansas Steel Associates.
He was a wonderful man who was adored by his family and friends. He enjoyed traveling, and experiencing fine dining and wines. Mr. Phillips loved his roses, The Pittsburgh Steelers, and animals, especially Pugs.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Marjorie (Bigelow) Phillips; and one brother, Calvin Phillips.
Mr. Phillips is survived by his fiancé, Janie Black of Newport, Arkansas; his father, Bertrand Phillips of Bangor, Maine; one sister, Marilynn (Phillips) Bishop of Veazie, Maine; two brothers, Dennis Phillips of Warren, Maine and Kevin Phillips of Bangor, Maine; two nieces and one nephew.
