Leola (Peggy)'s Story
- Leola (Peggy) Whiting Dean, widow of Wallace Dean, Jr., went to be with her Lord and Savior on April 10, 2017. She was born in Garland, Maine on April 21, 1925 to John and Blanche Coleman-Whiting. She was educated in the Garland schools until they closed the high school in 1942. In her late teens and early twenties, she sang and played guitar on a Bangor Radio station in a group known as "The Buffalo Girls." She graduated from Guilford High School in 1943. She married Wallace (Buster) Dean on February 14, 1944. They were married for 64 years until his passing in November of 2008.
Peggy's first employment was at Fay Scott's in Dexter. She went on to work at the Gold Nugget Restaurant, Guilford Woolen Mills, Prides Manufacturing, the University of Maine- Machias' cafeteria, and D.W. Smalls.
Peggy moved with her husband to Machias, Maine when he was employed at the Cutler Naval Radio Station. She had been an active member of Machias Valley Baptist Church since 1960, where she served as a Sunday school teacher, Awana leader, Church Secretary, and Choir Member.
She is survived by her son Barry Dean and his wife Lorraine. She was pre deceased by twin daughters. Glenda died shortly after birth April 23, 1948. Brenda lost her life in the fire at Squaw Mountain in Greenville on June 30, 1968, where she was employed for the summer.
Peggy is survived by 4 grand children- Michael and his wife Carol-Ann, Matthew and wife Jenny, Melinda and husband Justin, and Marcie Dean and Neil Peace. She has 5 great grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren.
She was predeceased by 5 brothers: Cecil, Chester, Louis, Lester, and Norman Whiting, and two sisters, Beatrice and Dorothy Stevens.
A Memorial Service will take place on Friday, April 21, 2017 at 4:00 in the Machias Valley Baptist Church Sanctuary.
The Graveside Service will take place on Saturday, May 20, 2017 at 1:00 at Lawn Cemetery in Guildford, Maine.
