Lawrence L. Rollins, husband of the late Beverly (Kinch) Rollins, passed away August 14, 2016. He was born June 4, 1927, in Augusta, the son of Joseph and Bertha (Brewer) Rollins. Larry will forever be remembered as a loving partner, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He enjoyed music, was a great singer, and loved good food, good friends, and fun times.
Larry was a hard working self made man from humble beginnings, a graduate of Cony High School Class of 1946. He served in the US Navy during WW II and was very appreciative of the care giving to him by the Togus VA Hospital. Most of his professional career was spent in the grocery business in the Augusta area. He began in 1960 as manager and part owner of Bernard's Foodland, on Eastern Avenue, and later, with partner Charlie Mills, built, owned, and operated Mr Market "Your Friendly Grocer's" in Augusta and Winthrop. Larry was a member of the Augusta Merchants Association, Board member of The Associate Grocers of Maine, and past President of The Augusta Parking District. After his days in the grocery business, Larry spent several years employed by the Dead River Oil Co. and later was employed by Webber Oil Co. as an Area Sales Manager.
Larry will always be remembered for his loving care he gave to his wife, Beverly, at the time of her terminal illness, his second live partner, Betty Turner at the time of her terminal illness, and his time as a hospice volunteer at The Residence at Gray Birch.
The words of his eldest son, Raymond, reflect all our feelings...You worked hard, you were generous. Your lessons taught were reinforced and made believable by role modeling, consistency and reinforcement. You were smooth, and cool. Perhaps a wee underlying intensity, occasionally on display. You laughed easily, your humor apparent. Sharp as a razor, quick as a cat. Your natural intelligence shone forth in your story telling prowess. You gave us all you had. Tangibles; intangibles. Your gifts remain within us, and we will all strive to let your light shine through as we perpetuate your morals, values and standards. You made a BIG difference, dude.
He was pre-deceased by his wife, Beverly Kinch Rollins; his second life partner, Betty Turner; and his grandson, Jason Davis. He is survived by his third life partner, Pat Blethen; his sons, Raymond and his wife, Margie, of Overland Park, Kansas, Mayor David Rollins and his wife, Jan, of Augusta Maine; his daughter, Lorna and her husband, F. Langdon Davis III, of West Chester, Ohio; three grandchildren, Heather Schooner and her husband, Joe, of Liberty Township, Ohio, Ashley Rollins, and Amber Rollins Andreasen and her husband, Jake, of Olathe, Kansas, Katherine (Katie) Rollins and her significant other, Eddy Delsignori, of South Boston, and Quincy, Massachusetts; and three great-grandchildren, Levi and Audrey Schooner, of Liberty Township, Ohio, Reilly Davis and his mother, Kelly, of Mableton, Georgia, and several nephews, nieces, and cousins from the Rollins and Brewer families.
