BREWER AND BANGOR - LaVerna M. Bovee, 94, died January 25, 2015, at Delray Medical Center, Delray, FL. She was born, May 5, 1920, the daughter of John and Martha Marburger in Lyons, KS.
LaVerna was a graduate of Chillicothe Business College, MO, and upon graduation went to Chicago. She was employed in various secretarial positions and spent much of her free time visiting all the museums and other places of notable interest in Chicago. Wanting to see more of the States, she eventually went to Denver, CO, and got a job with the U.S. Government in the Office of Price Administration. World War II had begun and the Women's Army Auxiliary Corps, (WAAC) was recruiting volunteers and she felt that was her chance to "see the world" so she enlisted.
LaVerna took her basic training in Des Moines, IA, and then was assigned to a Radio School in Kansas City. After completing that school, she was sent to Majors Army Air Field, Greenville, TX, where she was assigned duty in the base "Radio Shack." It was here she met and later married CMS Lyle W. Bovee in the chapel at Majors Army Air Field.
When the war ended, LaVerna was honorably discharged from the Women's Army Corps, (WAC) and continued working in Civil Service positions on Air Force bases to which her husband was assigned. Among other positions, she was Secretary to the Wing Commander of Dow AFB, Secretary to the Surgeon of Barksdale AFB Hospital, LA, and a variety of Base offices as the years went by. She followed him to Itazuke AB, Japan, and RAF Lakenheath, England plus many stateside bases.
After 30 years of active duty in the Air Force, her husband retired and they settled in Brewer. Both worked in a variety of jobs and volunteer positions before retiring. LaVerna was an avid stamp collector for many years and an accomplished seamstress. For a number of years, LaVerna and Lyle spent their winters in New Smyrna Beach, FL. She enjoyed Florida very much because it gave her the opportunity to go swimming every day which is something she truly loved to do. They moved to Sunbury Village in Bangor in 2003. LaVerna and Lyle celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary at Sunbury Village in September 2004.
LaVerna was predeceased by her husband of 63 years, CMSgt Lyle W. Bovee; her parents; a sister, Thelma Riley of Brookings, South Dakota; and a brother, Grant Marburger of Norman, Oklahoma. She is survived by her son, SMSgt Tim Bovee USAF (Retired) and his wife, Patty, of Brewer; granddaughter, Sarah Allen and her husband, David, of Saint Augustine, FL; grandson, SSgt Sean Bovee of Joint Base McGuire/Dix, NJ; and her great-granddaughters, Riley Jean and Katie Anne Allen of Saint Augustine, FL.
