Laurette's Story

Winterville and Eagle Lake - Laurette M. Tardie, devoted wife of Lionel Tardie passed away peacefully surrounded by her family at Mercy Home in Eagle Lake on September 1, 2016. Laurette was born in Eagle Lake on December 1st 1923, one of 8 children of the late Thomas and Lydia (Belanger) Madore of Eagle Lake.
Laurette was a resident of Winterville for most of her adult life. She taught in local schools for 33 years after achieving a teaching certificate at the young age of 18, from the Fort Kent Normal School, now the University of Maine at Fort Kent. She always had fond memories of her students and teaching from a one room school with all grades with over 40 students to teaching at the end of her career with one grade and 30 students. She had the unique distinction of teaching each of her children in grammar school as well as having disciplined classrooms and a passion for the math and the sciences. In her later years, she really enjoyed having students visit and share fond memories with her. Having been raised on a family farm, she knew the value of hard work, responsibilities and relationships that served her well throughout her adult life. Laurette will always be remembered for her love of Lionel, commitment and love of family, commitment to her St. Mary's Catholic Church and her community.
Laurette was an exemplary matriarch for her family. Her passion for cooking, knitting, crocheting, making jams and jellies for family and friends kept her very busy in her retirement years. She knitted wool socks, bonnets, and mittens for her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. She also knitted and donated mittens and bonnets to needy school children throughout her years of teaching. She crocheted an afghan blanket for each of her grandchildren that are personal treasures. Family gatherings were always a very special time for her and Lionel to enjoy the love and joy of family and friends.
Laurette is predeceased by Lionel, brothers Armand, Joe, Edmund, and Adrian Madore; sisters Emily Roy, Aurora Kovacs and daughter Louise Kuusela. She is survived by her sister Bernadette Deschaine of Fort Kent, sister in-law Lila Tardie of Winterville, one son and two daughters; Don and his wife Lynda Tardie of Ashland, Elizabeth (Liz) and her husband Ron Guy of Eagle Lake, Ann and her husband Mel Belanger of Soldier Pond, son in-law Larry Kuusela of Raymond, Maine. She is also survived by 10 grandchildren, Michael, Cathryn, Tim Tardie, Lorne Guy, Rachelle Michaud, Nathan Guy, Kristin Belanger, Sarah Gagnon, Jonathan and Josh Kuusela, as well as 18 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
Friends may call on Thursday evening, September 8, 2016 from the hours of 6-8 p.m and 9 to 10:30am Friday at the Daigle Funeral Home, Fort Kent. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 11 am. Friday at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Eagle Lake. Committal services will follow in the parish cemetery.
