ANN ARBOR, MI - Kathy Hessert-Tucker, educator, musician and beloved wife, died Monday afternoon, February 29 after several hospitalizations.
She struggled with illness much of her life, but was committed to teaching, singing, dog-breeding and serving her Lord Jesus. She was born in Bangor, ME October 21, 1947, one of two children of John and Gwendolyn Hessert. She married William Tucker February 16, 1974 in Cambridge, MA. She graduated from Simmons College (B.A., 1969 with honors) and the Harvard Graduate School of Education (M.Ed., 1973). She taught English in the Boston Public Schools (1970-1975), the Brockton (MA) Public Schools (1986-1989), several community colleges and finally Eastern Michigan University from which she retired in 2001. She aspired to go to seminary and would have gone this fall. She loved Papillons (dog breed), the Maine coast, Kauai, Jane Austen, spring bulbs, folk music, church liturgy, and Bible study. She was a member of the Papillon Club of America, St. Clare's Episcopal Church choir and Bible Study Fellowship.
She leaves a devoted husband (William Tucker), a brother (Peter Hessert), a sister-in-law and brother-in-law (Donna Tucker and Steve Nicolai), nieces Julia Hessert, Bethany Gagne, Rebecca Hessert, and a nephew, Joshua Hessert.
A memorial visitation will take place Thursday, March 3, 2016 from 6pm- 8pm at the Nie Family Funeral Home, 2400 Carpenter Rd. Ann Arbor, MI. A memorial service officiated by Reverend James Rhodenhiser will be held Friday, March 4, 2016 at 1pm at St. Clare's Episcopal Church in Ann Arbor, MI.
In honor of Mrs. Hessert-Tucker, memorial contributions may be made to St Clare's Episcopal Church Music Fund and the Haiti Outreach Fund.
