Karl graduated from Central High School in Corinth and then spent the next 4 years serving in the Marine Corps. Following the service he worked for a time at Dexter Shoe Company in Dexter, and then along with his two brothers, worked at Moosehead Manufacturing in Dover-Foxcroft. Later he worked as a store manager for Irving Oil Company in Bucksport. During that time he also attended Eastern Maine Community College in Bangor.
Karl's special interests were in woodworking and farming. He had a couple of beef critters, "Merle" and "Babe", raised chickens, had a special turkey, "Henrietta", and had just gotten into raising rabbits. He loved his John Deere and he, along with his friend, Cory Barker, were always heading for coffee and then to Tractor Supply.
He is survived by his parents of Dexter; a son, Daryl Hartley of AZ; a sister, Kayla Nelson of CA; and a brother, Kent Hartley and his partner, Lisa of Dexter; step-children, Michelle Badger and her husband, Peter of LaGrange, Eric Moulton and friend, Andrea McRae of Bangor, and Shawn Moulton and friend, Marci Grant of Bangor; several nieces and nephews; special friends, Jean Conner and son, Randy Conner; and their dog, Rambo.
He was predeceased by his wife, Gloria "Glo" (Moulton) Hartley in 2001; a brother, Kelvin in 2015; and a sister-in-law, Tammy in 2016.
No public services are planned at this time. A committal service will be held in the spring at the Highland Cemetery in Carmel with his friend, Rev. Paul Dunphy officiating.
In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that donations in his memory be made to the "March of Dimes".
