ROCKLAND - Judith Orne Shorey, 82, passed away peacefully on Monday, February 29, 2016, surrounded by loved ones. Born in Rockland, on March 16, 1933, she was the daughter of Arthur Knowlton and Jeanette Smith Orne.
She grew up in Greenville, Delaware and summered in Rockland, with her grandparents, Blanchard B. and Alfreda Bicknell Smith. She spent many years raising her family in Madison, New Jersey, and in 1985 relocated to Rockland, where she was passionately involved in many community organizations. She attended Colby College and later became Director of Volunteers at Pen Bay Medical Center. During her years in New Jersey, she was active with the Madison Volunteer Ambulance Corps. In addition, she was actively involved with the PEO Sisterhood and enjoyed her swimming group at Samoset Resort in Rockport.
In addition to her parents, Judy was predeceased by her brother, Peter K. Orne Sr. She leaves behind her children, Steven and wife, Lisa Shorey, of Litchfield, Jeanne and husband, Leo Paquette, of North Yarmouth, Susan and husband, Kenneth Dorval, of South China and Kenneth and wife, Holly Shorey, of Lebanon, Tennessee. She also leaves her wonderful grandchildren, Mark and wife, Danielle Shorey, Tucker Shorey, Leo Paquette III, Sarah, Sam and Michael Dorval. Along with her immediate family, she leaves many special nieces and nephews; her cousin, Rebecca Hokkenan; and special companion, George Chappell. She will be remembered for her active social life and commitment to her family history on the coast of Maine which includes special memories of Pleasant Beach in South Thomaston.
A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, March 12, 2016, at the Rockland Congregational Church, 180 Limerock Street, Rockland. A gathering will follow at the Samoset Resort in Rockport. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the P.E.O.
