Tess moved to Oakfield early in her childhood as her father was the Oakfield yardmaster for the Bangor and Aroostook Railroad and her mother was the Oakfield school teacher.

During her working career, Tess was an administrative assistant for Grant's Dairy, Toner Farms owned by Darrell Toner and Hilltop Lanes. She also worked, as the office manager at Moore Chemical Company owned by David Moore. She would spend time with siblings Janet Callnan and husband Bob and Malcolm Dow and wife Mary Ann in Florida. She and Russell also visited her brother Marvin Dow and wife Ruth in Virginia during trips to and from Florida. Tess was a gracious host and her home was often a home away from home for all and a great place to visit.
