DELTONA, Fla., and ORRINGTON - Jonathan Warner Lawton, 75, passed away April 17, 2015, surrounded by his family. Jon was born in 1939, in Porter Township, MI, to George Lawton and Maude (Stafford) Lawton.
Jon graduated from Kalamazoo Central High School. He was attending Western Michigan University, where he met the love of his life, Charlotte Porter. Jon and Charlotte married in 1962. He enlisted in the Army and served from 1963 to 1966. After he served, Jon continued his education at WMU. Jon, Charlotte and their daughter, Jennifer, moved to St. Cloud, MN. He worked for St. Regis Paper Co. He was active in Toastmasters and the Methodist church. In 1980 Jon, Charlotte and their two daughters moved to Bucksport, where Jon worked at the paper mill until 1990. Jon was active in the Franklin St. United Methodist Church and Coast Guard Auxiliary. 1990 brought Jon and Charlotte out to WI, where he continued to service the paper industry. While in WI, Jon and Charlotte started their kayak adventures on the Wisconsin River. In 1994 Jon and Charlotte moved back to ME. He continued to service the paper industry until he retired in 2002. After returning to Maine, Jon and Charlotte continued their kayaking adventures and camping the islands along the coast of Maine. They soon became involved in the Maine Island Trail Association (MITA). MITA became a very important part of their lives. After retiring Jon became a Skipper for MITA. They actively participated in the spring and fall island clean ups. They also went out weekly to monitor the islands that are part of the trail. They loved being part of MITA and preserving the coast of Maine. In 2014, Jon and Charlotte were honored by MITA with the Dave and Dorrie Getchell Spirit of MITA award.
Jon is survived by his love, Charlotte; his two daughters, Jennifer Jacobs and her husband, Steven, of Brewer and Julie Lawton-Miller of Middleton, WI; four grandchildren, Kristina and Matthew Jacobs of Brewer and Morgan and Jack Miller of Middleton, WI; one brother, George Lawton of MI; two sisters, Mary Larson of IL, and Beth Glen, PA; three sisters-in-law, two brothers-in-law, and numerous nieces and nephews. Jon was predeceased by his parents, his in-laws and three of his siblings.
Celebrations of Jon's life will take place in Maine, Michigan and Deltona, Fla., at a later date.
