John's Story

COLUMBIA FALLS - John Allen Tibbetts died January 26, 2016. He was born November 21, 1937 at Dr. Simicek's Ocean View Hospital in Jonesport, Maine, the son of Gertrude (Allen) Tibbetts and Morris David Tibbetts.

John graduated from Maine Central Institute in Pittsfield and Washington State Teachers College in Machias. He did graduate studies at the University of New Hampshire and the Lincoln Filene Center for Citizenship and Public Affairs at Tufts University and took many in-service courses in innovative practices in education. In 1961 he began his career in education teaching fifth grade for four years at the Austin Annex of Frisbee School in Kittery, Maine. He spent the remainder of his career in the Portsmouth, NH school system holding numerous positions including at Mary C. Dondero School a fifth/sixth grade teacher, member of the Boyan Library Committee and advisor to the Joint Building Committee for the rebuilding of the school. At Portsmouth Middle School he was first a sixth grade teacher then assistant to principal, John M. Stokel, and finally an eighth grade history teacher. For many years he was chairman of the Social Studies Committee K-12 and he was director of the E.S.E.S. Title III project that built and trained teachers for Little Harbour School. He retired in 2000.

John was a member of the Columbia Falls United Methodist Church and served on the church board and was superintendent of the Sunday school. He later became a communicant of St. John's Episcopal Church in Portsmouth, NH. He had a lifelong interest in the Ruggles House at Columbia Falls and was for some years a member of its Board of Directors. He had a great interest in the history of both Columbia Falls and Portsmouth as well as in his family history.

John is survived by his cousins, Bion B. Tibbetts III, Constance (Allen) Blattenburger and many other cousins including those in the Allen and Morris families and wonderful neighbors and friends.
