Houlton - John E. Scovill passed away on January 31, 2017, at a local healthcare facility. John was the son of Gerald and Grace (Kennison) Scovill. He was born on March 5, 1938, in Calais, Maine. He is survived by his wife of 55 years Gail (Henderson) Scovill. John graduated from Houlton High School in 1956 and the Massachusetts College of Pharmacy in 1960.
John was a quiet, friendly man, who practiced pharmacy for 54 years 25 of which were at Plaza Pharmacy in Houlton, Maine. He completed his career at Patten Drug, which is owned and operated by his son-in-law Joel. John enjoyed his years there and met many new friends. John was a past member of the Houlton Rotary Club, past president of the Houlton Chamber of Commerce. For over 50 years, he was a member of the Military Street Baptist Church, where he had served as a deacon for a number of years. John also enjoyed ham radio WA1MTT. He enjoyed great motorcycle trips with his son-in-law, nephews, and friends. During his high school and college years, John had worked on the Bangor and Aroostook Railroad and always enjoyed working with his model trains. Following his time at pharmacy school, John served his country in the United States Air National Guard for four years.
Besides his wife Gail, John is also survived by his daughters Jona Fitzpatrick and her husband Joel of Patten, and Karyn Scovill of Portland. His granddaughters Delaney, Rylee, and Alexis Fitzpatrick, they called him "Papa" and they were the "apples of his eye." John is also survived by his sister Patricia Estabrook of Houlton, his sister-in-law Lois Bates also of Houlton, several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Friends may call 10 a.m., Thursday, February 2, 2017, at the Dunn Funeral Home, 11 Park St., Houlton, where a service will be conducted at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Dr. Gary Johnson officiating. Interment will take place in the spring at Littleton Cemetery, Littleton. In lieu of flowers, gifts may be payable to Greater Houlton Christian Academy, the American Parkinson's Association, or charity of one's choice c/o of Dunn Funeral Home, 11 Park St., Houlton, ME 04730.
