Mt. Desert - John Herbert Carman Jr. died peacefully on June 24th in his Mt. Desert, Maine, home under hospice care and surrounded by family. He formerly resided in New Brunswick and Highland Park, New Jersey.
Herb was the firstborn son of the late John H. Carman Sr. and Lillian E. Twyman Carman. Born on February 5, 1937, in New Brunswick, New Jersey, he grew up in New Brunswick with his six brothers and one sister.
Educated in the New Brunswick Public School system Herb went on to receive a Bachelor in Business Administration from Rutgers University in 1960 and a post graduate Elementary Teaching Certificate from Trenton State College in 1965. He taught eighth grade math for thirty-seven years in the New Brunswick School system and later continued to teach in the Mt. Desert School system.
In 1979 during his career as a teacher he married Linda Kyle. He leaves to cherish his memory his wife of thirty-nine years Linda Carman; two children Mary Beth Montoya (Luke) and Gregory Stephens (Jodi); five grandchildren; three brothers James M. (Yvonne), Robert W. and Edwin G. (Pamela) and his sister Carolyn L. Blackwell (Bernie); as well as a host of other family members and friends.
We remember Herb as a loving, dignified man who was a beloved teacher and baseball coach at St. Peter's CYO, St. Mary's CYO, the New Brunswick Little League and New Brunswick Babe Ruth League, as well as the Coordinator of summer playgrounds for the New Brunswick Recreation Department.
Among his many involvements he participated as a member of Kirkpatrick Chapel committee 1981-1985, member of the St. Michaels committee 1981-1983, treasurer 1981-1998, member of the board trustees executive committee, 2000-2001 and co-chair Rutgers University Friends of the Geology Museum since 1995.
A veteran of the United States Army, Herb was also active in the Procter Foundation since 1992. A member of the New Jersey Education Association, the Middlesex County Education Association, the New Brunswick Education Association, St. Peter's Athletic Association, Rutgers College Alumni Association (correspondence secretary, vice president, president elect 1992-1985, president 1985-1986, Phonothon All Star Team 1991-1997, Hall of Fame 1997).
In 1977 Herb was honored to receive the Loyal Son of Rutgers Award earned by officers of the alumni association for extraordinary service to their Alma Mater. In 1986 Herb was unanimously elected as an Alumni member of the Board of Trustees of Rutgers University from 1986-1992 and Charter Trustee 1996-2002. Herb was elected Trustee Emeritus Rutgers University from 2002.
In addition to his parents, Herb was predeceased by three brothers Lewis A. Carman, Frederick T. Carman and Noel S. Carman.
Herb and his family have a very special bond with Rutgers Athletics. Their love of athletics led them years ago to endow an athletics scholarship, the J. Herbert Carman, Jr. Endowed Athletic Scholarship.
