EAST MADISON AND SIDNEY - John Francis Greene, 93, husband of Carmela (Palmieri) Greene, passed away peacefully on January 15, 2016, in Waterville. He was born on August 27, 1922, in East Madison, Maine, the son of Alton L. and Marjorie Myra (Hayden) Greene.
He was predeceased by his parents and by his only sibling, Norman A. Greene. John's family roots in Somerset County include his great-grandfather and name-sake, John Lee Wilson, a soldier serving with the 2nd Maine Calvary during the Civil War.
A graduate of Madison Memorial High School, John served in World War II as an engineer in the Army Air Force stationed in India. Thereafter, he returned to East Madison and followed dual careers as a master electrician and a textile designer and manufacturer until his retirement in 1987. John was a long-time member of the East Madison Volunteer Fire Department, serving several years as Fire Chief and always taking part in the annual ritual of finding, cutting, and lighting the village Christmas tree. He also enjoyed vegetable gardening, an avocation learned from his father during the Great Depression, and always looked forward to fishing trips with friends, and later with his children and grandchildren, to Rowe Pond. After he retired, and until 2011, John and Carmela ("Mimi"), his wife of 67 years, were winter residents of Plant City, Florida where he played golf and tournament cribbage and hosted family excursions to Florida attractions. For the past four years he had lived in Sidney, Maine.
John will be remembered for his modesty in his accomplishments, including, most importantly, instilling in his children and grandchildren the values of integrity, hard work, education, and independent thinking, as well as the importance of family. His quiet strength in facing chronic illness in recent years was helped, in large part, by the constant care and support from his devoted wife and the attention he received from his daughter and special son-in-law. The family is also grateful to his caregivers and friends at Fresenius Medical Care (Augusta) and, more recently, Mount St. Joseph Residence & Rehabilitation in Waterville.
In addition to his wife, Mimi, John is survived by a daughter, Becky Greene (and husband Peter Grant) of Sidney, and four sons: Daniel (and partner Sue Palakawong) of Sidney, Garry (and wife Chris) of Hampden, Allen (and wife Janice) of Woolwich, and Vincent (and partner Julie Foster) of Brunswick. Also surviving are seven grandchildren: Richard Greene, Melissa (Greene) Young, Nicole (Luce) Troger, Jonathan Greene, Nathan Greene, Joseph Greene, and Jasmin Greene; as well as eight great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be scheduled at a later time. A online guestbook may be signed and memories shared at www.lawrybrothers.com. Arrangements are by Lawry Brothers-Wheeler Funeral Home of Oakland.
