SHELTON, CONN. - John E. Glowa of Shelton, CT passed away at Hewitt Memorial Hospital on Thursday, July 10, 2014 after a lengthy illness. John was born in Salem, Mass., Oct. 26, 1930 to Henry and Anna (Skobliniak) Glowa.
He graduated from St. John's Prep in Danvers, Mass., in 1948. He later enlisted in the Air Force and was stationed in Fairbanks, Alaska and Presque Isle, where he met Margaret Beaton. They married on June 13, 1953. In 1955, John and Margaret moved their family to Connecticut where he worked for Sikorsky Aircraft until his retirement in 1985. "Gramp" was an avid fan of the Boston Red Sox and the Men's and Women's Husky basketballball teams. He was a long time baseball coach in the Shelton Little League, Babe Ruth League and Colt Leagues, coaching his teams to two League Championships. "Gramp" loved to fish and spend many wonderful summers with "Gram" and the family at their camp on East Grand Lake in Danforth.
John was predeceased by his parents, sisters, Mary, Pauline, Veronica, Jane, Helen and Stella, and a son, Andrew. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Margaret, sons, John and his best friend, Joanne, and Steven, grandchildren, John, Joseph and wife, Amy and Leanne Honious and husband, Zane, Jeffrey, Andrea and Michael, and great-grandchildren, Hunter, Connor, Brook, Caldre, Colby and Zander.
Friends may call Saturday from 9-10:30 a.m. at Riverview Funeral Home, 390 River Rd., Shelton, Conn. His memorial service will follow at 10:30 a.m. at the parlor. His burial with military honors will be at Riverside Cemetery. The family requests that memorial contributions may be made to Griffin Hospital Cancer Center, 350 Seymour Avenue, Derby CT 06418.
