GARLAND - John J. Giles, 91, died April 3, 2016, at Mayo Regional Hospital in Dover-Foxcroft. He was born in Dexter, January 12, 1925, the son of John E. and Margaret (Scott) Giles.
John grew up in Garland and attended Garland schools. He served in the U.S. Army during WWII, and was stationed in China, Burma, and India, and was a life time member of the Shirley B. Carter VFW Post.
John was a shift supervisor at several area woolen mills and later worked as an inspector at Dexter Shoe Company for 22 years. He also served on the Board of Directors for the Maine Highlands Federal Credit Union.
He enjoyed fishing and traveling. His travels included trips to Canada, Prince Edward Island, Ireland and Scotland. John loved having his family around, and enjoyed family barbeques and working in his gardens.
He was predeceased by his parents; a brother, Gerald Giles; sisters, Betty Clukey, Margaret Ordway, and Lucy Bell Giles.
He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Barbara (Shannon) Giles of Dover-Foxcroft; a son, Robert Giles of Garland; a daughter, Carol LiPuma and her husband, Bill of Litchfield, NH; 4 grandchildren, Cathy Walter and her husband, Steve, Tricia Daziel and her husband, Rob, Jodi Hanson and her husband, Brad, and Jamie Gallant and her husband, Gary; and great grandchildren, Leah, Alex, Caroline, Madison, Cassidy, Kendall, Brookelin, Marshall, and Mitchell; many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held 2 PM, Thursday, April 7, 2016, at Crosby & Neal, 61 Main Street in Dexter. Friends may call from 1 PM until the time of the service. Burial will be later in the spring at the Evergreen Cemetery in Garland.
