BANGOR - John L. Dudley, 76, passed away peacefully on Sept. 5, 2015, at a Bangor healthcare facility, surrounded by his family. He was born in 1938 in Hanover, NH, the son of Robert M. and Helen (Johnson) Dudley.
John completed his bachelor's degree in English at the University of Maine in 1962. He subsequently began a 35-year career as a high school educator and earned a master's degree in education at USM. During a 12-year tenure at Morse High School in Bath, John taught English and coached football and wrestling. His football teams won five consecutive state championships from 1968 to 1972. He continued as a teacher and football coach at Cony High School in Augusta and later served as an assistant principal. His community involvement included organizing an annual Jimmy Fund golf tournament, serving on city committees, and running youth football camps.
John is survived by his wife Carol (O'Connell) Dudley, their three children, and four grandchildren: Juli-Ann Stickney, her husband Andrew, and their sons Zachary and Drew of Milton, GA; John L. Dudley, Jr. of Canton, MA; and Jane Poulin, her husband John, their son Henry, and their daughter Parker of Bangor. John is also survived by his sister Ann DeWitt of Topsham and predeceased by sister Jane Newhall and brother William Dudley. The family would like to thank the outstanding staff at Stillwater Healthcare for taking excellent care of John during these last few years.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 11 a.m., Saturday, Sept. 12, 2015, at St. Paul the Apostle Parish, St. John's Catholic Church, York St., Bangor. Burial will be at Mt. Pleasant Catholic Cemetery in Bangor, with a gathering of family and friends immediately following. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Stillwater Healthcare, Activities Fund, 335 Stillwater Ave., Bangor, ME 04401.
