PORTLAND - John Joseph Buckley, 92, a resident of the Maine Veterans Home in Scarborough since 2009, and formerly of South Portland passed away January 22, 2015 at Maine Medical Center.
John was born August 2, 1922 in St. Stephen, New Brunswick, Canada and was a naturalized citizen of the United States. He was the son of William P. Buckley and Catherine (Davidson) Buckley of Calais, Maine.
He attended Sacred Heart Grammar School, Cheverus High School in Portland, and Salinas Junior College in Salinas, California.
He married Lillian Elizabeth Campbell on March 2, 1944 in Portland, Maine. John was a radio mechanic in the United State Army, 73rd Army Air Force Base Unit. He was awarded the American Theatre Campaign Ribbon, Good Conduct Medal, and the Victory Medal. He was a pilot with over 400 hours logged and was in the Officer Candidate School in California when the war in Europe ended.
John was a communicant of Holy Cross Church in South Portland where he was a member of the choir and worked at the Christmas fair annually. He was a member of the Cheverus Council 2344 of the Knights of Columbus. He was employed by A&P as a buyer.
He and Lillian traveled many times to Europe including Czechoslovakia and Yugoslavia. They toured the United States as well as the Eastern and Western provinces of Canada. They loved round dancing and big band music.
He is survived by three daughters; Peggy Buckley of Gorham, Jan Ashton and her husband Neil of Brewer, grandsons Joe Crowell of Connecticut and John Buckley of Herman; Kathy Cote and her husband Roland of Readfield, grandchildren Theresa Boynton and her husband Robert and their children Scott and Sydney of Gray, and Michelle Brzoza and her husband Joe and their children David and Genevieve of Essex Junction, Vermont. He is also survived by his brother-in-law Bert Campbell of Waterville. He was predeceased by his wife Lillian in 2012, his parents, sisters-in-law Doris Campbell, Frances Campbell and brother-in-law Jack Campbell.
A memorial Mass will be celebrated at Holy Cross Church, 124 Cottage Rd, South Portland on Saturday February 7th at 10 am. Interment with Military Honors will follow at Brooklawn Memorial Park, 2002 Congress St., Portland. A reception will follow at A.T. Hutchins Funeral & Cremation Services, 660 Brighton Ave, Portland.
