Joan's Story

BREWER - Joan "Joanie" (Barder) Twitchell, daughter of John and Anna Barder of Lykens, PA, died Jan. 10, 2015, after a battle with cancer. Joanie grew up in Lykens, PA, graduated from college in Hagerstown, MD, then worked for the federal government at Walter Reed Medical Center in Washington, D.C., as a medical secretary, where she met her husband, Barry, who was stationed there as a medical specialist. They came to Maine to raise their five children and she worked with her husband in the family business. Joanie was an avid golfer making a hole-in-one in 1994. She played the piano at bedtime for the children, loved gardening and was a devout catholic and member of St. Paul the Apostle Parish.

Surviving in addition to her husband, Barry P. Twitchell of Brewer are her daughters, Lisa and her husband, Dr. Don Lynch, of Newburgh, Laurie and her husband, Peter Suchecki, of Oakland, CA, Krista and her husband, MSgt. Dennis Arnold, of Lakeville, MN, Tracey and her husband, Tod Pray, of Minot, ME, and her son, Lt. Col Mark Twitchell (Ret.) and his wife, Erika, of Pensacola, FL; grandchildren, Zachary Jamieson, Jessica Mortvedt, Leah and Bryant Arnold, Emily and Alex Twitchell, Isabella and Gracie Pray; great-grandchildren, Kelsie and Madison Jamieson, Mathew and Dylan Mortvedt; two sisters, Patricia Barder of Lykens, PA, and Mary Kiley of Brewer; many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her three brothers, Robert, Jack and Edward Barder of Lykens, PA. Joanie's family gratefully thanks Dr. Alisa Roberts, the staff at St. Joseph Home Care and Hospice and CancerCare of Maine for their excellent care.

Family and friends may visit 5 -7 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 14, 2015, at Kiley & Foley Funeral Service, 69 State St., Brewer. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 11 a.m. Thursday, Jan 15, 2015, at St. Paul the Apostle Parish, St. Joseph Catholic Church, North Main St., Brewer. Burial will be at a later date.
