HOWLAND - Joan W. Merrill, 93, passed peacefully on September 28, 2015 at Cummings Nursing Home in Howland. She was born February 2,1922 to Merle and Gladys Weymouth.
Joan, better known as Gigi, was an avid traveler, writer and lover of animals, especially cats. She took numerous vacations and cruises throughout her life and was happiest when accompanied by family on those trips. She was a substitute teacher for many years in Howland where she lived most of her life. She had a passion for education and poetry with the ability to take any family occasion and turn it into a poem. She will always be remembered as a beautiful, brilliant, creative, outspoken lady who was never too tired or too busy to help her family in any way they needed.
Joan is survived by her son, Joel Merrill of Florida, daughter Suzanne Collins of South Carolina and daughter Merla Roy and husband James of Alton. Grandchildren, Cameron Currier of Enfield, Wendy Webb and husband Tommy of Georgia, Michael Collins and husband Robert Hupf of South Carolina, Marcey McIntyre and husband Jason of Hampden, Mark Nadeau Jr of Brewer, Andy Roy and wife Natalie of Texas, Erika Nadeau and partner Kortney Lambert of Maryland, and Jennifer Roy of Alton. Great Grandchildren, Cameron Currier Jr, Brenda Sue Currier, Matthew Ward, Travis Webb, Brendan McIntyre, Ian McIntyre and Braiden Nadeau. Great-Great Grandchildren, Sean and Dakota Ward.
Joan was predeceased by her parents Gladys and Merle Weymouth and the love of her life, her husband Elbridge J Merrill.
Friends may call from 11-12 noon Friday at the Clay Funeral Home where funeral services will follow at 12 noon, with the Rev Steve Smith officiating. Interment will be at the Howland Cemetery.
