Jerome's Story

PRESQUE ISLE - Jerome Herbert Manter, passed away peacefully at the Presque Isle Nursing home on January 15th, 2015. He was born in Fort Fairfield on April 13, 1922. He was the youngest son of Ada (Hitchcock) and John Manter. He grew up and graduated from Fort Fairfield High School class of 1940. He owned and operated Jerome's Market and Jerome's Auto Sales. He also served as the Fire Chief of the Fort Fairfield fire department. He began his long career in construction in 1960 with the JR Cianchette Construction Company and in 1962 Jerome began working for the Lane Construction Company. He worked for Lane for thirty years and retired as the plant manager in Presque Isle in 1992. Jerome was a long time resident of Presque Isle. He loved spending time with his family and he was a respected member of the community. He was a long time member of the Maine Better Transportation Association and for many years, was a director on the Northern Maine Fair Board, where he made many life-long friends. Jerome always looked forward to the annual fair.

He was predeceased by his wife Marion (Wood) Manter, who passed away in March of 2014, six siblings, and one stepson.

Survivors include his three children, son John Manter and his wife Norma of Spring Hill, Florida and Fort Fairfield; daughter Carol Ricker and her husband David of Fort Fairfield; and son, Robert Manter and his wife Betsy, of Portland, Maine. He was also survived by his three step daughters, Adrienne Morang of Windsor Connecticut; Bonnie Glidden, and her husband Fred of South China; and Diane Monahan, and her husband Steve of Presque Isle. Jerome's grandchildren who loved him dearly - Brian Manter, Jeff Manter, Shawn Manter, Erica James, Michelle Trinceri, Heather Golden, Michael Glidden, Dori Rancourt, Tiffany Glidden, Jeff Morang, Jennifer Barnes, Todd Smith, and Sarah Smith. His great grandchildren will surely miss going over to "Gramp's house" to dip into his extensive collection of "caps", which he greatly enjoyed giving out to them.

He will be sadly missed by his family and those who came to know him during his lifetime. A special thank you to the Presque Isle Nursing Home staff for their excellent care.

Services and burial will be in the spring. He will be buried next to his wife at the Fairmount Cemetery in Presque Isle. Specific arrangements will be announced at a later date.
