HAMPDEN AND DOBBS FERRY, NY - Jeptha Milton Gibbs V, 51, died unexpectedly in Hampden, January 15, 2015. He was born in Chicago, Jan. 28, 1963, to Jeptha M. Gibbs IV and Melissa (Meyers) Gibbs. He married Cathy (Cline) Gibbs, from Campobello Island, NB, in 1986.
JM was raised in New York City. He joined the U.S. Navy in 1983, serving on the USS Flint. as an Electronics Technician until 1989, when he joined the Naval Reserve, working in many capacities. In 2006 JM joined the Air National Guard. During his military career, he served in both Gulf Wars, received the Air Force Achievement Medal for the Operation Enduring Freedom mission, the Meritorious Service Medal for Outstanding Service to the US Air Force and retired as Master Sergeant after 28 years of service. JM mentored countless people throughout his service and had a very significant role in shaping the Air National Guard 102nd Network Warfare Squadron. While in the military, JM graduated from NYU, earning a BS in Economics. He worked for Chemical Bank while in school and upon graduation for Chief Economist Dr. Irwin Kellner. In recent years, he worked in IT Security and Risk Management at Chase Bank until his death.
In August of 2014, JM moved to Maine from Dobbs Ferry, NY, to pursue his dream of opening a racing-themed pub that was scheduled to open this spring in Ellsworth. He was active in many community-based projects and charities in the Ellsworth area and beyond. His latest hobbies included cooking, beer-making and a budding interest in bee-keeping and goat husbandry.
JM is survived by mother, Melissa Gibbs; wife, Cathy Gibbs; daughter, Mary Taylor Christina Gibbs; and sister, Mary Melissa Lee.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Memorial Service with military honors in May, in New York.
